New activities for the cold winter months

It has been a busy month at Birch Grove Community Center. We have been trying to incorporate new activities to fill up some of those cold winter hours.

On Tuesdays there is open gym pickle ball from 9 a.m. – 11a.m., always lots of laughter and good exercise. This game is played somewhat like tennis, instead of a racket and tennis ball a wooden paddle and plastic ball are used. Come in and give it a try!

Scrap ‘N’ Craft, which is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon with friends and kids, work on hobbies, share ideas, visit and enjoy potluck. The next scheduled date is Feb. 7, 2016 from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. Stop in and get those creative energies working.

Ruby’s Pantry food items will be available the second Wednesday of each month. We are going to try to put a food shelf in place to support our goals with nutrition. The next available date is Feb. 10.

W.E. Fit Exercise is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. in Community Room 2. Senior Exercise is Monday, Wednesday and Friday (Zumba on Friday) from 10:30 -11:30 a.m.

January has been a busy month at Birch Grove Community Center, beginning with the Senior Lunch, which is held every Wednesday starting at 11:30 a.m. Other ongoing events include pickle ball, Scrap ‘N’ Craft and W.E. Exercise. And beginning Feb. 4, a free Tax Aide Program will be offered on Thursdays through April 14.

We have numerous pieces of equipment available as well as DVDs. In February we plan on having an instructor available from the YMCA, we are still in the process of confirming this.

The Tax Aide Program with Tom Fredeen will be available on Thursdays starting Feb. 4, 2016. This service will be available every Thursday from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m through April 14, 2016.

A Tech Support program is starting January 27, 12:30 p.m. – 4 p.m. Cole Dauer is currently providing Cole’s Tech Support service at the Clair Nelson Center in Finland.

Anyone needing help with their phones, tablets, laptops, security issues or software, stop in to meet Cole.

The skating rink is open and ready for skaters! The ice is beautiful and there are skates available to rent. The warming house is open and the outdoor rink lights are on for some evening fun!

Greg Fangel and Liz Wagner have offered cross country ski lessons. There are three Friday dates available for lessons: January 29, February 5 and 12. Meet at Britton Peak Trailhead at 1:00 p.m., if you need equipment we have rentals available for $5 per person.

Caregiver Coffee is held the second Friday of each month, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. Get to know other caregivers in a casual setting, take part in a discussion about resources and share information. It is a good conversation when you know you are not alone and people want to help.

Senior Lunch is available every Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Barb Merritt always creates a wonderful meal! You can check Boreal Community Calendar for the available menu on Wednesday mornings. Call for reservations at 218-663-7977. This is such a fun event, a good place to eat, laugh and catch up on the West End news with good people!

Thank you to all the people who participate, assist and support our West End and Birch Grove Community Center.
