At the July 28 meeting of School District 166, it was announced that the district had signed an agreement to sell the bus garage it owned at the Birch Grove Community Center/School in Tofte. Since the sale was pending, the purchaser’s name was not revealed. At the Thursday, August 13, 2009 Tofte Town Meeting, the new owner himself shared the news—Tofte Supervisor and owner of Nelson’s Towing, Paul James, announced that he was now the owner of the old bus garage.
James said he and his wife, Pam, would operate Nelson’s Towing, which they have owned since 2005, out of the garage. “We’re going to fix it up and store our trucks there,” he said.
Tofte Supervisor D.C. Olsen noted that some drainage problems had been noted on the site. James said Cook County Soil and Water had been contacted for advice. He said he and Birch Grove would work with David Demmer on a plan to detour water that is running through the bus garage.
The unheated, uninsulated garage had been on the market for $37,000 and had three offers, two of them over the asking price, according to listing real estate agent Terry Backlund. It was sold for $38,200.
