Nearly 50 local business people gathered at the Naniboujou Lodge on May 8, 2014. The event, hosted by the lodge owners, Tim and Nancy Ramey, was set as an opportunity for local businesses to network while enjoying a preview of the Naniboujou’s summer menu.
The lodge, which emphasizes simple relaxation, will soon be opening for the season. Located 15 miles east of Grand Marais, it features cozy, beautiful rooms, many of which are adorned with antique furnishings and Amish quilts. Wherever possible the Rameys, who have owned and operated the lodge since the early 1980s, have kept the lodge in its original 1929 style.
After a tour of the lodge, the guests dined in the Great Hall as Tim related some of the history of the Naniboujou. The hall itself still features a Cree Indian motif, which has not been altered since it was opened. The word Naniboujou actually is Cree for God of the outdoors. Opened originally as a private sportsmen’s club it was converted to a lodge open to the general public a few years following the 1929 stock market crash, which started the great Depression.
Nancy, who is also the main chef, presented and served samples of their breakfast, lunch and dinner items including: The Naniboujou Omelet, a French Man’s Toast, Three Bears Porridge, the Naniboujou Club Sandwich, Kara’s Grilled Turkey and Swiss, Wild Rice Risotto, as well as exquisite samples of cedar planked wild Alaska salmon and cranberry pork tenderloin. Needless to say, no one left hungry!
