Music of Fisherman’s Picnic





Music has been a part of Fisherman’s Picnic since its very beginning. Fisherman’s Picnic 2009 offers the following slate of musicians.

Joe Paulik plays a great

blend of thought provoking

originals as well as familiar favorites in the folk-guitar tradition. He accompanies himself on a 12-string guitar on the Harbor Park stage on Thursday, July 30 from 11:00 – 12:30 p.m.; on the East Bay stage on Friday, July 31 from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.; and again on the Harbor Park stage on Saturday, August 1 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Portage is a popular local

band that offers good

old-fashioned, danceable, country music. Band members are Butch Deschampe, Jimmy Spry, Tom Hoy, Arvid Dahl, and Susan Maijala. Portage appears on the Harbor stage from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 30 and on the East Bay stage from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 1.

James Moors has

appeared at Fisherman’s

Picnic in the past in another guise. Moors is otherwise known as Sterling Waters and he returns to the Picnic with emotional guitar styles, meaningful lyrics and down-to-earth music. Moors will play on the Harbor stage on Thursday, July 30 from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m.; on Friday, July 31 from 11:00 – 12:30 p.m.; and on Saturday, August 1 from 3:30- 5:00 p.m.

Sivertones is Liz Sivertson

and John Gruber, talented

blues and jazz performers who have played in a variety of venues, including a feature performance at the 2009 Grand Marais Jazz Festival. They will play on the Harbor stage on Thursday, July 30 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. and on the East Bay stage on Friday, July 31 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Ckastle Danger brings

high energy to Fisherman’s

Picnic. Patrick Knight and Jonathan Ramey, who performed upstairs at Betsy Bowen Studio in Fisherman’s 2008, retrun and will appear on the Harbor Stage on Thursday, July 30 from 8 – 11 p.m.

pc2 is a two-person

group performing with

a MIDI, which fills the stage with the sound of a full band. pc2 will appear on Friday, July 31 on the Harbor stage from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Pete Kavanaugh performs

rock and blues with masterful

guitar playing. He will play Harbor stage on Friday, July 31 from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. and the East Bay stage on Saturday, August 1 from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. He will also join Bicycle Army at the American Legion on Friday, July 31 from 9:00 p.m. to close.

Michael Rodes is an excellent

vocalist who performs

with background music, karaoke style. He is renowned for his Elvis tunes. Rodes performs on the Harbor Park stage on Friday, July 31 from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. and on the East Bay stage on Saturday, August 1 from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.

Rod ‘n Real AKA Cook

County’s Most Wanted

offers fine rock and classic country at the Howl’n Wolf Saloon at 2066 W. Highway 61 on Friday, July 31 from 9:00 p.m. to close and at Birch Terrace on August 1 from 1:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Vintage Mink is fronted

by Lutsen natives Joshua

and Jacob Schmidt and is known for its aggressive rock & roll and classic blues. There’s only one chance to catch this popular band, on Friday, July 31 from 9:00 – 12:00 a.m. on Harbor Park stage.

Michael Monroe is

perhaps the most well

known of the Lions bandstand performers. This popular ecofolk reggae artist will be performing on the Harbor stage on Saturday, August 1 from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. and again on Sunday, August 2 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

Big & Tall Men AKA Bump

& the Boys perform folk

and bluegrass to the delight of audiences of all ages. They take the Harbor stage from 9:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 1.

Shriner’s Band, a fraternal

brotherhood of musicians

performs on the Harbor stage after the parade on Sunday, August 2 from 2:00 – 2:30.

Sofa King, a hard-rocking

band from Finland will

play at the American Legion on Saturday, Aug. 1 from 9 p.m. to close.

Bicycle Army, influenced

by a wide range of rock ‘n

rollers, will shake things up at the American Legion on Friday, July 31 from 9 to close.

Thunder Bay Bagpipers

are a constabulary band

(policemen), which has

won many awards and has even traveled to Scotland to take part in musical competition. They are returning to the Grand Marais Harbor stage on Sunday, August 2 from 2:30 – 2:45 p.m. with haunting bagpipe tunes.

Grand Marais Idol allows

Fisherman’s Picnic participants

to share their talents o n the Harbor stage. Idol hopefuls will entertain in the preliminary round from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31. The Grand Marais Idol finals will be on the East Bay stage from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 1.
