As competitors who raced in the Gunflint Mail Run, we were excited to try our luck at mushing in the Midwest and experience this great tradition outside of Alaska. If you saw us gliding or driving by, you might have noticed the “No Pebble Mine” patches that we and our dogs are wearing or the “Save Bristol Bay” decals on our sleds and truck. That’s because we’re “mushers on a mission” to raise awareness of the dangers of the proposed Pebble Mine to Bristol Bay, Alaska, home of the world’s and our country’s largest sockeye salmon fishery.
Bristol Bay’s vast wilderness also supports tremendous wildlife, and it sustains plenty of people too, including ourselves and thousands more who make a living commercial fishing in Alaska.
Bristol Bay is also a sportsmen’s paradise where people enjoy some of the best hunting and fishing on earth, and others feed their families in the grueling winters with the bounty of the harvest and the catch.
Fortunately, we can all be part of protecting this unique place. Please join our cause by reading up on the issue at www.savebristolbay.org and clicking the take action page, where you can fill out a quick, easy form asking your congressional representatives and the EPA to protect Bristol Bay.
