Mush for a Cure

Pretty in pink! The 2013 Mush for a Cure was held March 8-9 and all of the mushers and dogs looked wonderful in pink. Leading them was Jessica Berg-Collman (above left) of Grand Marais, who was first across the finish line on Poplar Lake. Jessica was also one of the top fundraisers in the field of 40 mushers who gathered for a photo in the snow that started falling at the end of the race. There were mushers from all over the U.S., as far as Washington State, New Jersey and even Louisiana!

Left: On Friday night these three local business owners—Bruce Kerfoot of Gunflint Lodge, Scott Harrison of Lutsen Resort and Forrest Parson of Hungry Jack Lodge—put their heads on the line to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. Together the men raised $6,000 from friends who wanted to see them lose their hair. The shaving took place in front of the uproarious crowd at Windigo Resort. Below left: There is a serious reason for all the silliness and that is to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation—and to honor survivors and those in the midst of their struggle, like Pam Taylor of Grand Marais. Pam is a Cook County High School teacher and athletic director who was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. Everyone was delighted that Pam could make it to a little bit of Mush for a Cure, where she helped hand out awards for most pledges raised, most money raised and more. (LR) Mary Black, Pam Taylor and Sue Prom. Mary Black and Sue Prom are organizers of the event which raised approximately $34,000 to fight breast cancer.

Before the race’s shotgun start on Gunflint Lake on Saturday, mushing fans got to meet—and pet—some of the dogs out on the ice. There was a record number of Samoyeds racing this year.

As if the event isn’t silly enough with all the pink, there is also Human Dog Sled Racing! The humans were surprised how hard it is to pull a sled.

The Friday night pre-race pasta party had an ‘80s theme with big hair, parachute pants, and of course lots and lots of pink. One of the highlights of the evening was the coronation of the King and Queen of the ‘80s, Steve Domantay and Lynn Kissock. A wilder and crazier royal couple has never been seen!
