In August of 2009 the North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum in Tofte started a new program Stories of the Fishing
Life
told by those who lived it.

The program of saving stories is now a quarterly event that is filmed and digitized onto DVD discs. This effort preserves the history of commercial fishing families and the lifestyle they experienced and exemplifies what has made the North Shore what it has become today.

The first event was held in September 2009. To date the public has enjoyed the stories of Cliton Maxwell, Brian Tofte, Walter Sve, Stewart Sivertson and Steven Dahl. Each event has been moderated by Art Fenstad.

The DVDs of these tales are available for purchase at the Fishing Museum in Tofte and are also available free to schools, historical societies and other social events that are looking for information about what is was like to be a commercial fishing family or a fisherman on the North Shore.

The Stories of the Fishing Life
is culminating its first year of events with a big gala event at Lutsen Resort on Nov. 20 with a family-style Scandinavian dinner that will be served while the crowd is told stories of their lives by George Nelson Jr., Howard Sivertson, Walter Sve and Art Fenstad. Again, the event will be videotaped and made into DVDs, and made available to the public.

Thisevent is the major fundraiser for the museum for 2010. The mission of the museum is to preserve and present the heritage of the North Shore. For more information or questions contact Tom Porter at (218) 220- 0204 or email: tomhporter@ gmail.com
