Cook County Law Enforcement received a report of an accident with multiple injuries in front of Nor’Wester Lodge on the Gunflint Trail at 4:48 p.m. on September 2.
The accident occurred when Marilyn Joyce Wahlstrom, 64, of Brooklyn Park, MN and three companions were traveling southbound on the Gunflint Trail. Wahlstrom stopped to make a left turn to the Laundromat at Nor’Wester Lodge. Curtis Wyatt Horton, 59, Newton, IA, driving a 2001 Chevy Silverado ran into the back of Wahlstrom’s 2012 Toyota Prius.
The Gunflint Trail Fire Department and Ambulance and Cook County Ambulance were paged and responded, with the first emergency responder on scene by 4:52 p.m. The Gunflint Ambulance was on scene at 5:23 p.m. and Cook County Ambulance reached the scene at 5:53 p.m.
Horton and his wife, Evelyn Jo Horton, 57; and Wahlstrom and both of her companions were transported by Cook County and Gunflint Trail Ambulances to Cook County North Shore Hospital. At press time they had been all been treated and released.
Cook County Sheriff ‘s Deputy Julie Collman said the parties were wearing seatbelts and the airbags in the Silverado deployed. Deputy Collman said there was significant damage to both vehicles and they are likely totaled.
A witness said Wahlstrom had her turn signal on as she stopped to make the turn to the Laundromat. A citation was issued to Curtis Horton for inattentive driving.
