Clean water has been vital to Cook County’s outdoor heritage and economy for generations. Many jobs and small businesses in Cook County depend on it. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is currently proposing weakened water quality rules that would harm fish and wild rice. The current water quality rules are reasonable, science-based, and have been in place for decades. Nearly every industry, municipality, and other entity has adapted to these rules.
The MPCA has a variance process to help businesses meet standards affordably. If anything, MPCA admits that current rules don’t protect our most sensitive aquatic insects and fish. Weakening the current standard is not in the best interest of our community or any community in the state. In support of our jobs, health, and heritage, Cook County DFL supports clean water and opposes any weakening of Minnesota’s water quality standards. Cook County DFL calls on the MPCA and Walz administration to uphold the current standards.
Please let MPCA know what you think. Public comment is being taken until February 24 at: www.minnesotaoah. granicusideas.com/ discussions weaken existing safeguards for water.
