The Minnesota Control Agency has made a preliminary determination to reissue a wastewater treatment permit for 10 years to Heritage at Lutsen, which is located at the end of Big Cedar Trail on the Superior National Golf Course.
The application and plans submitted to MPCA state that the development is to have a total of 44 lots.
The existing facility starts with a grinder pump at each residence, followed by force main leading to a series of two septic tanks. Flow from the septic tanks goes through a filter tank, a recirculation tank, and a vertical flow wetland (recirculating gravel filter). The wetland system is designed to provide treatment of the wastewater.
Following the wetland, the wastewater is pumped to a grade infiltration bed.
There will be a 12,000-gallon dosing tank which will be used as an equalization tank to limit flow to the infiltration beds at a maximum rate of 4,320 gallons per day. Flows more than 4,300 gpd will be pumped and hauled by a licensed septic pumper. This will allow for phase two construction of this project to be combined with phase 3 construction. Additional infiltration beds and treatment train will be added to the facility as part of the phase 3 expansion. Phase 3 shall be completed upon creation of the first homes in the development.
