There probably weren’t too many walkers out on the blustery day that this automatic counter was installed by Greg Lindsey of the University of Minnesota and Patrick Knight of Moving Matters. However the pedestrian counter will provide important data for the upcoming streetscape redesign process. There are a number of counters in place throughout the county right now.
This summer the City of Grand Marais and Moving Matters are working with the University of Minnesota and Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) to count the number of people walking and biking in Grand Marais. Automatic counters have been installed at a few locations to track pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
The data gathered will provide information for the upcoming Streetscape Redesign Process for the Highway 61 corridor in Grand Marais.
According to Maren Web of the Moving Matters project, the group, with funding from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota’s Center for Prevention, is working to create safer and more accessible places to walk and bike in Cook County and Grand Portage.
