Moving it at the Senior Center

For the month of May, Chair Zumba was offered at the Senior Center with Chris Angelo through Moving Matters. Chair Zumba is similar to Zumba Gold with the movements modified and most or all of the routines are performed while sitting in chairs. We had such a great turnout, we are working on continuing those classes throughout the summer. As soon as the details are worked out, we will announce the details.

In May, our Community Conversation was with Frank Lehto along with a postal inspector from the United States Postal Service. Frank discussed how to manage your mail, strategies for snowbirds, how to quickly sort through your mail and determine what’s really important. He talked about using online postal services, explained usps.com, how to ship items that you’ve sold online from your home and mail fraud (including common mail and money order scams). It was a great turnout and we look forward to having Frank return in the future.

On May 20, we wrapped up a successful first year with our Inter-generational Reading Program. The friendships that were created this year between the generations were pretty incredible. The students and the adults were sad to see the year come to an end but we look forward to continuing the program next year. Thank you to all the adult readers that volunteered their time. You truly did make a difference!

Coming in June

Mark Privratsky will be in town on June 14 for a “Congress Comes to You” meeting. If you’re having a problem with a federal agency or program like Medicare, Social Security or Vets Benefits, they want to help. If you have an idea or an opinion on an issue before Congress, come to the Senior Center and talk with Mark on Tuesday, June 14 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Along with all the activities going on at the Senior Center, we are also working with an organization called ElderCircle, to seek qualified candidates for the position of office support at the Cook County Senior Center. Job duties include assisting with day-to-day operations at the Senior Center, answering phones, organizing, and filing. Person must maintain strict confidence and must be able to work independently. Data entry knowledge a plus but not required. Applicants must be 55 or older, legally eligible to work in the U.S., living in a household with income no more than 125 percent of the federal poverty level and able to work 20 hours per week. For an application, contact Jes or Bev at 218-387-2660.
