The Lutsen 99er mountain bike race came to an abrupt end for one racer, a 32-year-old man from Duluth, who took a tumble 2 ½ hours into the challenging competition. No other bikes were involved. The racer was apparently making a mechanical adjustment on his bike and lost control. Other bikers assisted the injured to the nearest water station near the Caribou Trail, and race volunteers got him in a vehicle and drove for assistance. Cook County Law Enforcement received a phone call requesting help at 10:09 a.m. on June 11 as the rescuers drove to the Lutsen Fire Hall. Lutsen First Responders met the group, and finding that the biker had facial, hand, and knee injuries, requested an ambulance.
Cook County Ambulance arrived at 10:30 a.m. and transported the man to North Shore Hospital. Race Director Adam Harju thanked the emergency responders. “Cook County Ambulance did a great job!” he said.
The racer, whose name has not been released, was transported to a Duluth hospital.
