Motorcyclist survives collision with deer

A motorcyclist collided with a deer on Highway 61 near Magney Lane in Schroeder at 3:21 p.m. on Monday, August 10.

Eric McIntosh, 31, of Columbus, Minnesota was traveling south on Highway 61 near the Cook/Lake county line. A deer jumped into the southbound lane, colliding head-on with the 2006 Yamaha motorcycle, causing McIntosh to lose control and enter the ditch.

McIntosh suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Lakeview Hospital in Two Harbors. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The motorcycle received moderate damage and was towed from the scene by Blazer’s Towing.

State Trooper Mike Kobelinski noted that this area of Highway 61 has seen a number of deer-related crashes recently. He reminds motorists to be alert for deer. The State Patrol also cautions people to not swerve to avoid wildlife— the best defense is to be buckled (or on motorcycles, wear a helmet) and brake.
