Motions approved at the Jan. 17 county board meeting




. Commissioners approved designating the Cook County News-Herald as its legal newspaper for publishing legal notices or 2017. . Commissioners approved a motion to amend the agreement with Nesgoda Services for Clearwater Road hazardous fuel reduction by extending the date of completion to June 30, 2017 and for the West Twin- Kemo lakes hazardous fuel reduction for the same date. Nesgoda Services wasn’t able to complete the contracts by Dec. 31, 2016. The grants for the work run out on Sept. 30, 2017. . A motion to approve a revolving loan to Mike and Teresa Chmelik for up to $75,000, and to be paid in increments was changed and now says “Approve a 20-year revolving loan for Mike and Teresa Chmelik for the Croftville Road Cottages, at an interest rate of 1 percent over the 10-year Treasury Bond with a second mortgage on the building as collateral and authorizing the board chair and auditor-treasurer to sign all loan documents. . The following people were appointed to the Parks & Trails Commission: Linda Newman, District 1; Jody Nonnemacher, District 2; Tim Kennedy, District 3; David Demmer, District 4; Paul Nordlund, District 5; At-Large committee members include John McClure and Mickey Brazell. Dave Mills will represent Grand Marais, April McCormick Grand Portage, Ex-Officio members include Cook County Commissioner Ginny Storlie with Heidi Doo-Kirk serving as the the back-up; U.S. Forest Service (Ex-Officio) Jonathan Benson; alternate Nancy Larson; Minnesota DNR (Ex-Officio) Kevin Johnson, alternate Joe Russell; Land Commissioner/ Parks & Trails Director (Ex-Officio) Lisa Kerr and Land Services Director (Ex-Officio) Tim Nelson.

There are eight voting positions. Commissioners voted to make Districts 1,3,5 and the City of Grand Marais appointments for one year and Districts 2,4, At-Large and Grand Portage two-year appointments. At the first year-ends, each appointment would then run for two years.

Funds to pay for the commission will come from the 391 Land Commissioner/Parks & Trails Budget. . With the deputy auditor/bookkeeper on an extended medical leave (with the intention of working up to 20 hours per week), the board approved temporarily increasing Rebecca Isbell’s hours from 32 per week to 40 hours per week. The board also approved temporarily hiring Aimee Luick at a rate of $25 per hour as needed.
