Where else but in Grand Marais will you find the combination of yoga, Art Colony pots for sale, and great container gardening information all rolled into a Saturday morning?
Beginning at 7:30 a.m. on June 2 at the Cook County Community Center, Eleanor Hoffman, a retired English professor from U of M Duluth who has settled into her second part-time career as a master gardener, will be here to teach yoga for gardeners.
She reminds us that gardening can be a very physical activity. We gardeners think nothing of getting out in the yard the first nice day of spring and doing physically exerting work for many more hours than it takes to run a marathon. Then, we wonder why our bodies hurt!
If you have limited space but really want to grow some fresh veggies, you will love the Veggies in Containers class taught by Diane Booth, Cook County Extension Director, starting at 8:30 a.m. Small spaces do not mean you cannot have great vegetables grown alone in containers or mixed with flowers. Size your containers right, make sure you have the right soils, and think about plant combinations that will work well. All this and handouts to make you a better container gardening grower.
Jane Horn, U of M master gardener, will be joining us to teach wonderful flower combinations in containers at 9:45 a.m. Jane began gardening 14 years ago and her garden was showcased as one of the Star Tribune’s “Beautiful Gardens” and has been featured on the Better Homes and Gardens website. Container gardening is one of her strengths and she has placed in the top 10 in Fine Gardening magazine’s Container Design Challenge.
Following the presentations, local master gardeners Nancy Carlson, Emma Bradley and Max Linehan will be doing hands-on planting demonstrations in containers from 11:15 to 12:30 p.m. Each will be doing something with a different design and flavor.
Join us for this fun-filled morning on Saturday, June 2 with great classes, refreshments, wonderful fact-filled information, and fellow gardener camaraderie! You can pre-register by calling the Extension office at (218) 387-3015. Cost is $20.
