In November a number of the court system personnel involved in the December 2011 shooting at the Cook County courthouse were recognized by their peers by Hennepin County and by the Minnesota Sheriffs Association. In December, another group of peers, the Minnesota County Attorney’s Association, gave special recognition of those involved in the horrific events of that day.
At the MCAA annual meeting in Bloomington, MN, on December 6, Cook County Assistant County Attorney Molly Hicken, Deputy/ Bailiff Gary Radloff, and attorney John Lillie were the guests of honor at the banquet. Hicken were unable to attend the event.
MCAA President Donald F. Ryan, the Crow Wing County Attorney, spoke of the December 15, 2011 shooting, describing it as an “attack on our system of justice.”
He said MCAA wanted to commend those involved in the incident for their continued efforts to ensure that all of our citizens continue to have access to a system of justice. “We simply want to acknowledge all they have been through,” said Ryan.
At the event, St. Louis County Attorney Mark Rubin received the 2012 M.A. Johnson Distinguished Service Award. The award recognizes
“one who demonstrates significant leadership and commitment to improve the quality of justice while enhancing public awareness of the office.”
In presenting the award, the association’s president commended Rubin for his response to last year’s shooting at the Cook County courthouse. Rubin drove to Grand Marais the following morning to assist the sheriff ’s office in preparing a complaint and volunteered the assistance of his staff until the Cook County office returned to more normal operations.
Last month, Rubin coordinated the first Northeast Minnesota/ Northwest Wisconsin County Attorneys Summit—attended by six regional county attorneys and three St. Louis County attorney’s office division heads—to discuss topics such as drug trafficking, domestic assault, courthouse safety and other current issues.
Rubin was elected county attorney in 2010. He has served as a prosecutor in the office for more than 30 years.
The Minnesota County Attorneys Association is the statewide organization of county attorneys providing training and organizational services to county attorneys’ offices throughout Minnesota.
