More opportunities to make a bowl for Empty Bowls

About a dozen people turned out a couple of Sundays ago to make bowls for the upcoming Cook County Food Shelf “Empty Bowls” fundraiser that will be held November 10 at the First Congregational Church. Because most of the people were novices, Joan Farnam and Ann Ward (pictured here) gave instructions and demonstrated proper bowl making technique.

The Empty Bowls Dinner & Silent Auction, a fundraiser for the community food shelf, will be held Thursday, Nov. 10 at the First Congregational Church. For a few more weeks on Sunday and Monday, community members have the opportunity to make a bowl—or two—for the benefit.

Students will learn hand-building and wheel-throwing while making two bowls for the fundraiser. Kjersti Vick, cochair of the Empty Bowls Committee, said, “Come get muddy and learn some new skills, all for a good cause. It’s fun to make bowls with friends and family, too!”

Head to the Art Colony for one of the two weekly sessions— Sundays from 2-3 p.m. and Mondays from 7-8 p.m. Or join friends and family for the popular “Paint-a-Bowl” event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 29 at the Art Colony.

And finally, mark your calendar for the dinner itself, on Nov. 10. Like last year there will be two seatings for the soup dinner—11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and 5-7 p.m.

The Cook County Food Shelf is providing food to more families than ever this year said Gwen Lenz, coordinator of the Food Shelf. The Empty Bowls Dinner & Silent Auction is an important source of income for the organization. Last year, Empty Bowls brought in $5,250 to the Food Shelf.
