More on sweet surprises

What better way for children to learn about love, respect, and the safety of family than in church?

It is not just about parents taking their little ones to God’s house to hear his word, it is also an extension of the family, those who gather there, the pastor, the congregation, all those parents and grandparents who greet us and make us feel welcome.

I have traveled to Grand Marais many times to visit our son and his family and on many Sundays I have gone to church with them.

When in Grand Marais I like to read the Cook County News- Herald’s many articles. I find the local news refreshing versus news of larger cities and all the violence in our world.

My visit last month gave me a little surprise, actually two little surprises. There was an article written by the pastor of the church our son and his family attend. The pastor mentioned the abundance of sweetness that had showered down on the children. This was the kind that children everywhere love candy!

But to me it is the kind of sweetness that this pastor and the congregation have given in abundance to my son and his family since they have attended church here in this community and it is where my 4- and 2-year-old granddaughters have felt at home at such a young age. At home enough to share their sweet surprise with the pastor by leaving two pieces of saltwater taffy in the pulpit.

Children love, respect and feel safe when they are given the same.
