According to Cook County Sheriff Mark Falk, there were three gunshot victims. One victim was treated and released from the Cook County North Shore Hospital in Grand Marais. Two other victims were transported by Cook County Ambulance to Essentia Health Hospital in Duluth, MN. Falk said at the time of transport, both victims were conscious and talking.
Falk would not release the victim’s names at this time, however according to WTIP Community Radio’s confidential sources, the most severely injured victim is County Attorney Tim Scannell, who was shot three times. Also injured, according to WTIP’s confidential sources, was a bystander, Greg Thompson and a court bailiff, Gary Radloff. Radloff was treated and released.
According to WDIO-TV, Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center spokeswoman Beth Johnson confirmed that Scannell was being treated for gunshot wounds Thursday evening. Spokeswoman Johnson said Scannell is in stable condition.
Sheriff Falk said the shooting suspect is Daniel Schlienz, 42, of Grand Marais. He was taken into custody inside the courthouse and is now incarcerated at Cook County jail.
The shooting took place at the conclusion of a criminal sexual conduct case at which Schlienz had been found guilty.
Witnesses to the shooting were sequestered in the courthouse until statements could be taken. Sheriff Falk said the courthouse is now locked down and will be closed Friday, December 16 to process the scene for evidence. Falk said investigators from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will take the lead in the investigation because a court officer was involved in the matter.
