More than 100 people took part in the Cook County News-Herald Moose on the Loose Cartoon Contest this year, and judging the winners was one hard thing to do.

Still, our excellent staff used their high-minded discretionary art skills to pick out three winners. Just because your drawing didn’t win, doesn’t mean it wasn’t great. What we have learned through this judging exercise over the years is that many fine artists are coming up the ranks.

Here are our 2016 winners. If you didn’t enter this year, don’t “moose” your chance next year.

Abby Cerio, age 8, from Eagan, Minnesota, won the 0-8-year-old age group with a beautiful picture of Moose Skywalker getting ready to defend his moose tribe against that insidious Darth Pig.

Grace Kaung, age 12, of Minnetonka, Minnesota, won the 9-13 age bracket with a colorful picture of a brown moose loose on a caboose.

Abbi Kreskern, age 14, Stillwater, Minnesota was our 14 and up winner. Abbi’s moose got spruced up with an “antler” cut. Very ingenious.

Right: Gunflint Mercantile is always a great place to be on the Saturday of Moose Madness. Children (and adults who are kids at heart) come into the store and take part in a variety of fun-filled activities. Here one curious youngster watches as an older sibling carefully decorates a carmel apple.

Good job, winners!
