It’s rare to see moose in the City of Grand Marais, although occasionally one will stroll through the upper part of town.

And when one is spotted, it causes a lot of excitement.

That said, excitement will be the order of the three-day Moose Madness weekend that will take place in Grand Marais from Friday, October 21 through Sunday, October 23.

Murray the Moose will hit the streets and mosey through downtown stores over the weekend, stopping for pictures and hugs and fur tugs from children, as well as adults.

Most stores will participate in the madness with moose themed sales. Area restaurants will also take part, with unique moose ales and sales of moose madness food to fuel the hikers about town.

One of the biggest events is the Moose Madness Medallion Hunt which will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, October 21. The first clues will be released at 9 a.m. on Friday, and the hunt will continue until the medallion is discovered.

If you are the lucky person who finds the medallion, please bring it to Moose Central (Visit Cook County office located next to the Dairy Queen, 116 West Highway 61).

When kids participate in some activities, they earn a moose buck (or two or three). This moose money has to be picked up at Moose Central and getting instructions on how to earn and spend the “moose money.”

Once enough moose bucks are made, they can be used to purchase T-shirts, puzzles, candy or some other item from the office.

There will also be more activities. Some include a coloring contest sponsored by the Cook County News-Herald, a moose artifacts display by the U.S. Forest Service, a moose poetry contest sponsored by Northern Wilds Magazine, a contra dance at North House, and another moose coloring contest sponsored by Joynes Ben Franklin, and more.
