Moose Madness helps foster another busy MEA weekend

While there were a great many participants taking part in the 2017 Moose Madness medallion hunt, this year’s super sleuths who followed the clues that led them to the medallion were Ryan, Angel, Michael and Brian Stichter from Princeton, Minnesota. Standing in the middle of the Stichter family with her arms around Angel and Brian is Visit Cook County’s Anna Klobuchar, the mastermind behind the clues.

On Sunday, October 22 it’s safe to say that hundreds of kids left Grand Marais with happy memories and a moose stuffed animal. 2017 was another excellent year for the Moose Madness Family Festival. The event is sponsored by the Grand Marais Area Tourism Association as part of Visit Cook County, with prizes donated by many of the local businesses in town.

The Visit Cook County team is still counting activity packets but predicts there were more kids this year than ever before. It’s exciting to see kiddos grow up as the same families return each year.

Then too, are the new families. This year we noticed many new families that had just heard about the festival, and they promised they’ll be back again next year. While the idea behind the Moose Madness festival is simple, it’s amazing how it truly gets families to play and spend time together. All ages can enjoy searching for the medallion, spending Moose Bucks, completing packets together, or any of the other activities going on around town. It is a fun event to put together, and we appreciate all the help we get from local businesses!

Moose Madness will be back October 19-21, 2018.

Moose madness poets rock!

Here are some selections from the hundreds of entrants into the Moose Madness poetry contest sponsored this year by Northern Wilds. Although these might not be judged winners, all of the entrants were winners in our book. Ages are given when the entrants put that information down.

Moose Madness Haiku

Beautiful aspen
I love your sweet smell so fresh
Oh woods, I feel one

Going to Grand Marais for fun
Throwing rocks is fun in the sun
The wind makes big waves
Hiking on trails save, my
appetite for dinner, run!!!

There was a moose named Mike
He liked to ride a bike
He hid in the woods
Flew out with the birds
And ate all day pike.
~Mike Cunat, age 12
