Those with qualifying life events, like having a baby or losing health coverage, can apply for a special enrollment period
Though open enrollment through MNsure has ended, there are still opportunities to enroll through a special enrollment period (SEP). Minnesotans who experience a qualifying life event (QLE), like aging off a parent’s health insurance (turning 26), getting married, or losing other health coverage, may be eligible to apply. A complete list of qualifying life events, including coverage start dates, can be found at MNsure.org.
New this year, Minnesotans who are new to MNsure and looking to apply for a SEP can now do so online. Individuals who do not have an application started with MNsure will first need to create an account and complete an application. This will determine if they are eligible to enroll in a private coverage (qualified health plan) through MNsure and if they are eligible for financial help. Applicants who are found eligible for a qualified health plan can then follow these steps to apply for a SEP through their enrollment dashboard. Please note: those who qualify for a SEP usually have up to 60 days following the qualifying life event to enroll in a plan.
Individuals who have a current application and need to make a change can call MNsure at 651-539- 2099 (855-366-7873 outside the Twin Cities).
Minnesotans who qualify for Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare, or are a member of a federally recognized American Indian tribe, can enroll any time of year. Visit MNsure.org to find out more about who can enroll in coverage now.
