Mn/DOT warns motorists to watch out for frosty bridge deck

Staff reports

At press time, a mix of snow and rain was falling on the North Shore—and a press release from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) was issued, cautioning motorists to be alert for frosty or icy bridge decks, overpasses and ramps.

Bridge decks can freeze much sooner than the roadway because elevated highway structures are not insulated by the ground. Although the main roadway may appear safe, the bridge decks are likely to be frosty or icy, particularly in the early morning and late evening hours.

Motorists are also advised to discontinue use of their vehicle’s cruise control during the winter months to avoid losing control of a vehicle on slippery roads. In addition, drivers should avoid using cell phones while driving, and remember that texting while driving is against the law.

Drivers may log on to www.511mn.org or dial 511 on the phone for current road and weather conditions before starting their trips during winter months.
