Missing Michigan man found dead in Grand Portage

When the 2008 Pontiac Vibe of a missing man from Allouez, Michigan was spotted in the parking lot of the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino on April 13, it was hoped that the mystery of his disappearance would be solved. Unfortunately, later that day, Marvin Leroy Manninen, 66, was found deceased a few miles from the lodge on the shore of Lake Superior. His body was discovered by a US Coast Guard helicopter which had been called to assist with the search.

The Daily Mining Gazette
of Eagle River, Michigan, had reported on Manninen’s disappearance for several days, beginning April 7. The paper reported that he was last seen the morning of Monday, April 5 on the way to an appointment with his attorney. The Civil Air Patrol conducted an aerial search in Houghton and Keweenaw counties of Wisconsin and eventually expanded the search to Ontonogan County. The Mining Gazette
said it is not known why Manninen traveled to Minnesota.

Cook County Sheriff Deputy Don Phillips said no foul play is suspected.
