Walter Caland, 76, from Ontario, Canada was struck by a vehicle while crossing Highway 61 at Broadway Avenue in Grand Marais at 6:42 p.m. on Sunday, June 29. Fortunately, he suffered only minor injuries—abrasions to his left and right forearms—and did not need to be taken to the hospital.
Caland was struck by a 2000 Ford van driven by Randy Oscar Sjogren, 65, of Grand Marais. Sjogren was heading westbound when Caland entered the crosswalk going south. Sjogren said the man was in his blind spot.
Minnesota State Patrol Officer Chris Thostenson said fortunately Sjogren was going at a very slow speed and Caland was struck lightly.
A citation was issued to Sjogren for failure to yield.
