Some of the finest amateur log rollers that can be found anywhere on the planet competed at the 2017 Minnesota State Log Rolling Championships in Grand Marais on Aug. 5.
Log rollers came from the Twin Cities, Wisconsin, and Illinois. The event was hosted by the YMCA Cook County North Shore Rollers (NSR).
The top three kids in four age groups for both boys’ and girls’ divisions made the podium.
Following the amateur competition, three professional women log rollers squared off against each other. Ellie Davenport took top honors against Jenny Atkinson and Alicia Diethart. Davenport finished third at the world championships held in Hayward, Wisconsin this year. She won the title in 2016. Atkinson has won a combined eight world championships in log rolling and boom running.
The U7 division was combined with boys and girls rolling against each other. First place went to Ellis Priest; Max Sofie was second; and Bear Atkinson took third.
A tremendous battle was held to see who would win the U10 girls’ championship. The crown went to Libby Magnone of Illinois, who narrowly defeated North Shore Roller and 2017 U10 World Champion Ali Duclos. Third place went to Aini Anderson.
Sullivan Johnson outrolled Isaac Lein to take the U10 boys’ championship with North Shore Roller Carter Silence taking third.
Cromwell, Minnesota roller Brandi Coleman used her fast feet to beat North Shore Roller Taylor Everson to take the U13 girls’ crown. Christina Loschy finished third.
In the U13 boys’ field, Dominick Magnone took three out of five falls against Jasper Priest with Jacob Diethart taking third.
Unbeatable Livi Papadopolous of Holmen, Wis. beat Hudson, Wis. roller Anna Davenport in a rematch of the U17 girls’ world championship match. Papadopolous hasn’t lost a log rolling match in four years. Amber Collman placed third.
The U17 boys put on a show, with aggressive rolling, showing their speed, strength, and endurance as they battled to see who could stay on top of the log. First place went to Kody Koblits, second to Andrew Serpico and third to North Shore Roller Dominic Wilson.
