On Wednesday, July 27, Secretary of State Steve Simon traveled to northeast Minnesota to speak at the 70th Annual Convention of the MN State Building & Construction Trades Council. He made a few other stops around the Northland, including a visit with Cook County Auditor Braidy Powers
The meeting with Auditor Powers was an opportunity to hear about local elections issues, as well as discuss new 2016 voter outreach initiatives aimed at voters with historically lower turnout rates.
Secretary Simon has unveiled a slate of new, non-partisan initiatives, including a new Pledge to Vote program designed to register hard-to-reach voters; Minnesota Students Vote 2016, Minnesota’s first ever statewide mock election for high school students; Minnesota College Ballot Bowl, a new voter registration competition where campuses across the state will compete against one another over the course of several weeks to register the most students; expanding the number of foreign languages supported for key voter fact sheets, instructions, and application; and much more.
Secretary Simon also met with the Two Harbors Area Chamber of Commerce. In addition to discussing voter outreach efforts, that meeting was an opportunity to hear from business owners with ideas on how to streamline services at the Secretary of State office.
He finished his busy day at the MN State Building & Construction Trades Council meeting at Fortune Bay Resort/ Casino in Tower.
