Minnesota Power/ ALLETE requests replacing the Taconite Harbor substation



Representatives of Minnesota Power/ALLETE will appear at the March 9, Cook County Planning Commission public hearing with a request to replace the Taconite Harbor substation with a new 115kV substation they plan to build and operate at Two Island.

When asked about the company plans, Amy Rutledge, Manager Corporate Communications responded, “In regards to your questions– Two Islands is part of the investment we are making in our system to replace aging infrastructure and ensure reliable electric service for the region and our customers well into the future. The Two Islands project is the replacement of an existing substation which is necessary due to age. The substation is located adjacent to the Taconite Harbor Energy Center- and will be built on MP owned property. The project also includes some additional upgrades and improvements to the transmission and distribution system to enhance reliability. it is located in Schroeder Township. We are working with both local and state agencies to secure the necessary permits and once those are secured, we expect to start preliminary site clearing, etc. later this year.” Rutledge was also asked about any plans Minnesota Power/ALLETE might have for the shuttered Taconite Harbors power plants and property and she said, “In terms of the facility- I don’t have any specific updates to share- but we are continuing to monitor opportunities for the site, respond to inquiries for potential use, and Minnesota Power is open to exploring ideas for how it could be utilized in the future.”

At the March 9 meeting the planning commission will also review proposed amendments to the Cook County Septic Ordinance Number 58. The septic ordinance was last amended April 24, 2018.

In short, the septic ordinance authorizes and provides for sewage treatment and soil dispersal in unsewered areas of the county; sets standards which promote “health, safety and welfare of the pubic as reflected in Minnesota statutes and adheres to the county comprehensive plan. Water plan and the county zoning and shoreland ordinance. It also establishes standards for upgrades, repair, replacement, or abandonment of subsurface sewage treatment systems, and penalties if the rules aren’t followed.

Sharon and Steve Frykman are requesting a ten-year Interim Use Permit to operate a home business in the Forest Agriculture/ Residential (FAR-3) zone district, on property adjacent to Cook County Road 44.

Gunflint LLC (Matt Regan) is requesting to build an accessory structure— 3,000 square feet— in accordance with Sec. 4.07(B)(11) within the FAR-3 Zone District: PID 51-401-2425.
