Minnesota DNR Conservation Officer Tales

CO Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) attended yearly in-service training at Camp Ripley during the week. A nuisance bear report was taken where a sow and a couple of cubs entered up to three different homes through screen doors or open windows.

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) spent the week at Camp Ripley teaching use of force and firearm skills and tactics.

CO Mary Manning (Hovland) patrolled, looking for early bear bait stations and checking established sites once legal baiting began. Manning investigated calls on shoreline and public water violations; information was forwarded to Cook County for follow up. The officer also assisted Cook County deputies with a domestic disturbance and issued a road kill deer permit.

CO Hannah Mishler (Baudette) checked anglers on Lake of the Woods and reports that a few were having issues catching smaller fish to keep, so they decided to keep two slot fish instead. The pair was charged for two illegal length walleyes and for angling with an extra line.

CO Brice Vollbrecht (Bemidji) and COC Shane Zavodnik worked in the Bemidji area and on a routine fishing check the person admitted to being 145 sunfish over the possession limit. Enforcement action was taken and all the illegally possessed fish were seized.

CO Bill Landmark (Pelican Rapids) investigated a report of an individual shooting geese out of season. It was found the individual shot the geese because he was sick of them defecating on his lawn. Enforcement action was taken for taking geese out of season.

CO Trent Seamans (Big Lake) assisted Stearns County with a stranded boat on the Mississippi River. The boaters launched a 17-foot V-hull boat in shallow water with a swift current. The boat ended up stuck on a rock bar approximately 100 yards downstream from the landing. The boat took a beating but all parties ended up safely on shore.

MCO Tom Hemker (Winona) had a bank fisherman report that his dog took off swimming away from him across a lake. He offered a boater $100 to get his dog. The boater retrieved the fisherman’s dog and accepted the $100. Rattlesnakes continue to move to uninvited areas.

CO Boyum (Rushford) spent time responding to rattlesnake calls. One snake was removed from a subject’s yard. Boyum also investigated a call where three fawns were found dead near a dried up pond. How the fawns died is unknown.

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!
