Cook County Law Enforcement was paged at 7:35 p.m. on Saturday, February 23 to respond to a call of a skier found “unresponsive” on a Gunflint Trail cross country ski trail.
Dan Bauman, owner of Golden Eagle Lodge, found the skier near Bearskin Lodge, on Logging Camp Road and Beaver Dam Trail, about five kilometers from his resort.
A Cook County Sheriffs Deputy and the Gunflint Trail ambulance responded and transported the skier to North Shore Hospital. The man, Thomas Paul Schusper, 53, Minneapolis, was deceased.
The cause of death is unknown and because it was an unwitnessed death, an autopsy is being conducted. The results should be available within a month, according to Chief Deputy Leif Lunde. It is suspected that Schusper died of natural causes.
