Frankie Miller was nearly flawless from the mound against Deer River on Saturday, June 27 in the North Shore American Legion’s Post 413 shutout defeat of one of their toughest rivals.
For the night Miller struck out 8, walked one, and didn’t give up a hit in a five inning game that was called because of the 10-run rule with the score 11-0.
It was Miller’s first no-hitter ever, including Little League.
When asked what he attributed the “No-No” to, Miller said it was the play of the guys behind him, plus he had good command of his pitches.
“First of all, we had most of our core [high school] varsity players show up and play. That really helped a lot. But what really stood out to me was the play of our younger guys. I can’t stress this enough, they came ready to play and played excellent. They were making great defensive plays and playing well on offense.
“The game just got easier and easier for me. I never had to worry when Deer River hit the ball. The guys behind me were just going to catch it or stop it and make the throw. There were a lot of really athletic stops behind me. I think we had only one error in the first game,” Miller said.
The younger guys Frankie was referring to were Andrew “Mini” Miller, Colton Furlong, Tristen Bockovich, Billy Hackett and Ethan Sporn.
Travis Bradley took the mound in the second game and American Legion Post 413 once again 10-runned Deer River, this time winning 17-2.
Jamie “Jammer” Wick wielded the big bat in both games, going 7-7, capping his night off with a grand slam in the second game.
“That was just awesome to see how well Jamie hit the ball,” Frankie Miller said. “No doubt about it, he was our offensive star for both games.”
