A new long-term exhibit is opening at the Cook County History Museum in Grand Marais this Memorial Day weekend.
On the Line: A Military History of Cook County explores the stories of service members from Cook County who served in all major conflicts from the Civil War through today, as well as the experiences of those families here “on the home front.” The exhibit makes use of two collections of letters from World War I and World War II. April 2017 marked the 100th anniversary of the American entry into World War I.
The exhibit was made possible through the generous support of Cook County families, local businesses, and the American Legion Post 413, the American Legion Auxiliary Post 413, and Sons of the American Legion Post 413. Families with local connections also donated or loaned photographs, documents, medals, letters, and uniforms for use in the exhibit. Visitors will be able to listen to oral histories, examine historic advertisements and posters, read letters from the front, and fill out World War I post cards.
Visitors are invited to the exhibit’s opening weekend with extended hours throughout the Memorial Day weekend. The Cook County History Museum will be open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, May 26 through Sunday, May 28, as well as 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, May 29. A companion radio production of 50 World War I-era letters from Albert Bally will also air this summer on WTIP.
