Mildred Viola Johnson,
90, passed away on March 17, 2012, at
Cook County Hospital & Care Center in Grand Marais, Minnesota.
Mildred was born June 30,1921, in Lutsen, Minnesota to Hedvig and Erick Leonard. She grew up in Lutsen, graduating from Grand Marais High School in 1939. She married Oswald (Tumsey) Johnson on June 5, 1942.
Mildred was a homemaker, helping many years at Matt Johnson’s Grocery, the family grocery store. She loved to walk and was often seen walking her daily route along Highway 61, for nearly 40 years. She was an avid fisherwoman, enjoying both boating and ice fishing, especially at Saganaga Lake, where she and Tumsey had a cabin. Mildred was a volunteer at the County Fair Board as treasurer and volunteered at the Cancer Detection Clinic at the Cook County Hospital for over 20 years.
Mildred was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she enjoyed a myriad of activities: teaching Thursday School, being a member of the Bethlehem Quilters, making quilts that were donated to people in need, Bethlehem Lutheran Church Women, and being named Angel of the Year in 2010.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tumsey; her parents; siblings Elmer Leonard, Gilbert Leonard, Art Leonard, George Leonard, Mary Fenstead, Martha Tormondsen, Mable Schwendig and Margaret Mitchell.
She is survived by her son David Johnson (Theresa) of Daphne, Alabama; daughers Linda Johnson of Grand Marais and Becky (Dick) Kayser of Presque Isle, Wisconsin; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
