Mildred Mainella, 103, of Grand Marais, died Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at the North Shore Care Center in Grand Marais.
Millie was born January 16, 1908 to August and Hannah (Carlson) Johnson in Duluth, and her family moved to Moose Valley in Hovland two years later. Millie attended school in Moose Valley and Hovland and after junior high, took a business course at Duluth Business University.
She was postmaster in Hovland for 26 years, and after retiring she and Charlie spent their winters in Tucson, Arizona.
After Charlie’s death in 1977, Millie continued wintering in Tucson until 1990 when she moved into the Grand Marais Condominiums. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Grand Marais. She enjoyed art and music and was an animal lover—both wild and domestic.
Millie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband
Charles Mainella in 1977; six brothers, John, Robert, Arthur, Charles, Clyde and Clarence; and a sister, Amy Udclaire.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews and greatgrandnieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial Monday, August 8, 2011 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Grand Marais. Burial will be in St. .John’s Catholic Cemetery.
