During the February 15 meeting of the Grand Marais Public Utilities Commission (PUC) the enthusiastic owners of Mike’s Holiday stopped by to have their photo taken. Courtney and Tim Quaife, trailed by daughter Payton, came to accept their energy efficiency rebate awarded by the city to the tune of $10,912 for a LED light retrofit at the Holiday store.
There to help award the rebate was Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency’s (SMMPA) Keith Butcher. SMMPA is the organization that helps cities and towns increase the presence of energy efficient building materials and practices throughout Minnesota.
“The payback was remarkable,” Courtney Quaife was quoted saying. “Especially with the rebate covering about 23 percent of the cost. This is a great service that the utility provides to help local businesses reduce costs and remain competitive.”
Before presenting the check Butcher mentioned that energy updates not only make economic sense but they also ease the need for infrastructure upgrades as well as benefitting the environment. According to SMMPA, Holiday’s LED upgrade will reduce electricity consumption at the store by 83,000 kWhs a year.
