Longtime volunteer assistant football coach Mike Prom will be the Vikings head football coach this fall.
Prom will take over for Bryan Carpenter, who has taken a new job that will not allow time for him to continue coaching. Carpenter only had one year as head coach, but for many years he was an assistant football coach for the Vikings.
In his resignation letter to the school board Carpenter said, “It was a dream come true to have the position as head football coach at this school and I never intended to leave the position so soon. However, new employment opportunities have made it impossible for me to continue as head football coach. I loved my time here as a head coach and I very sincerely thank everyone involved for allowing me the opportunity to be part of this institution.”
Carpenter recommended that one of his assistants be selected as head coach to replace him. “They are and have been great coaches and role models for this community.”
The Vikings were 9-3 under Carpenter and finished runner-ups in the section 7A 9-man division. Seven of the starters including Mike’s son, Josh, the team’s all-conference quarterback, graduated last year, leaving big shoes to fill.
