Michael John Jansen, of Grand Marais, Minnesota, passed unexpectedly at home on January 4, 2022.
Mike was born December 14, 1953, in St Paul, Minnesota to Claude David Jansen and Darlyne Lois (Zaccardi) Jansen. Mike graduated from Hill Catholic School, Maplewood, Minnesota, Class of 1971.
Mike was proud of his many years of hard work and his diverse work history starting young delivering a paper route. Mike often recalled his time heli-logging and working on fishing boats in Alaska. He also spent many years as a printer. He worked locally in Grand Marais with Liljestrand Dry Walling and ended his career working with the team at Hedstrom Lumber Company.
Mike will be remembered by family as an artist and carver. He has had his work displayed throughout Minnesota including carvings at the Thunderbird Hotel in East Bloomington and at the The Duluth Grill in Duluth, Minnesota. Additional works can be seen at several Grand Marias locations: Hedstrom Lumber Company, Chippewa Cemetery, the Beaver House, and a piece created with his beloved stepson Yarrow Korf outside of the Miller Rental Complex. He has also sold his art privately and gifted artwork to friends and family.
Mike was preceded in death by the love of his life, Nina (Korf) Oullis, his father, Claude David Jansen, and his brother and childhood best friend, David Anthony Jansen.
Mike is survived by his two children Jeremy (Carrie) Jansen and Laura (Glen Dahl) Jansen and two stepchildren Yarrow Korf and Austin Oullis, his mother, Darlyne Jansen, his siblings Jennifer (David) Mrozinski, Joseph Jansen, Jaima (Tom) Hanson, and Claudia Jansen, six grandchildren, Lute, Birk, Alma, Orin, and Lars Jansen, and Wyatt Michael Dahl, his cat Little One, and many cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends.
The family would like to extend an open invitation to all those who would like to come to a celebration of Mike’s life at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hovland, Minnesota at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2022, with a luncheon to follow. Please in lieu of flowers consider donating to the Colvill First Responders in Mike’s name to help the family express their deep gratitude of the service provided to Mike in the end.
