Michael Charles Taapa


 

 

Michael Charles Taapa, 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 25th, 2022, at home in Grand Portage.

Mike was born December 17th, 1942, to Helge and Lila (Mattson) Taapa. He grew up in Embarrass, Minnesota and loved spending time at the family cabin that he helped his dad build, on Lake Vermilion. Mike enjoyed outdoor activities: fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, ATV-ing, flying, and boating.

Mike was a proud member of Local 106 Painter Union. He spent time salmon fishing in Alaska. He was a flight instructor and flew float planes for Wilderness Wings out of Ely, Minnesota. He also delivered new planes to remote areas of Alaska to their new owners.

Mike is survived by his wife, Edith (Oberg) Carlson-Taapa; daughter Michelle (Ron) Widner of Hotchkiss, Colorado; son Jon Taapa of New Mexico; stepsons Ron (Joe) Carlson of Minneapolis and Rodney (Julie) Carlson of Grand Marais; Grandchildren Seth Russell, Gavin (Kaile) and Chandler Widner, Harley Taapa, Aaron and Nate Carlson. Great-grandchildren Payton, Annalee, and Declan Russell, Theo and Silas Widner.

A family service will take place summer of 2023.
