Junior outside hitter Meredith Sutton had a monster year for the Vikings. She was on top of most of the statistics in the Polar League, and she led her team to the Minnesota State Championship for the second year in a row. The only two times, in fact, that the Vikings have made it to state in volleyball.
“Meredith had a phenomenal year,” said her Viking head coach Pam Taylor. “She finished with 407 kills, 51 solo blocks, 27 set assists and 39 ace serves.”
Sutton joined 20 other Class A players to be named First Team All-State. Colleges throughout the area are recruiting her, and it is well known locally that the University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball coach would love to have her join the Bulldog squad after Meredith graduates.
Now that high school volleyball season has been completed Meredith will once again play on a club team from Duluth. She and her teammate Raina Ryden—who like Meredith was named first team Polar League All-Conference—play for the Duluthbased Minnesota North volleyball team, which is made up of northern Minnesota all-stars. Last summer Minnesota North placed third at the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Nationals in Orlando, Florida. Sutton was named All-America for her play in that tournament.
As far as next year, the Vikings return a strong line-up. It was coach Pam Taylor’s last year coaching the Vikings. Her team is 48-6 over the last two seasons, and with Sutton coming back, it might be a three-peat for the Vikings.
Meredith is the daughter of Kevin and Jen Sutton, Grand Marais.
