Cook County High School Junior Meredith Sutton let the cat out of the bag this past week when she announced on Facebook that she would attend the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) to play volleyball. It was no secret that UMD was heavily recruiting Sutton, who plays for UMD assistant coach Christyn May, who also coaches the Duluth-based Minnesota North team, which is made up of high school all-star players from the Northland.
Sutton, an All-State volleyball player, was also named All-American last summer for her play in Florida for the Minnesota North club at a national tournament, has helped lead CCHS to the state volleyball tournament the last two seasons.
At 6 feet tall and a great leaper, Sutton is a hard-hitting front line player and an equally skilled backcourt player. She should be able to help UMD, who is currently ranked 7th in Division Two national polls and is continually building a stronger program.
But the Dogs will have to wait one more year. With Sutton and a strong cast of players at her side, the Vikings have a good chance of making a third straight trip to the state tournament, which will also be Viking head coach Pam Taylor’s last year as head volleyball coach. After 35 years, Taylor said next season would be time to retire.
Meredith is the daughter of Kevin and Jen Sutton of Grand Marais.
