For many Memorial Day has become a day for family picnics and taking a long weekend holiday. But it should be remembered that there were many who fought and died so you could take that long weekend.
Memorial Day was set aside as a federal holiday in 1971. It is a day to remember and honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. military.
In Cook County the Memorial Day Service will be held Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m. the Cook County Courthouse lawn.
Following the service there will be a free lunch for veterans and their spouses at Birch Terrace Restaurant from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All others will be charged $15 for their meal.
