Meet Rae Poynter

Rae Poynter is the new Communications & Marketing Director at North House Folk School. She is a familiar face to some, but not all. The Cook County News-Herald caught up with her and did a brief interview to introduce her to our readers.

Q- Where did you grow up?

A- I grew up near Clayton, Wisconsin, a small town in northwest Wisconsin of about 500 people.

Q- What brought you to the Northland?

A- I moved to Cook County in 2016 after graduating from college. Having grown up in a rural area, I had a deep love of nature and knew I didn’t want to live in a large city, but I also wanted a new adventure. My mom’s side of the family has long had connections to the North Shore, and it seemed to have a good mix of a lot of things I was looking for in a place to live.

Q- What is your educational background?

A- I graduated from UW-Eau Claire with a degree in Communication Sciences & Disorders, which is the prerequisite degree for becoming a speech-language pathologist. I worked at Great Expectations School for a number of years while I decided whether I wanted to pursue graduate degree and continue down that path. Turns out I didn’t, but I’ve always had a strong love of writing, and started writing for Northern Wilds and Boreal. That led to a career change into what I’m doing now, which is communications, marketing, and writing.

Q- How did you learn about North House?

A- I attended a Winterers’ Gathering shortly after moving to Grand Marais and loved it. (I was finally around fellow winter-lovers!) Over the years I’ve taken courses, volunteered, and done weekly Work Study. My spouse has also been a deckhand on the Hjørdis and has taken classes too.

Q- What do you like to do in your free time? Hike? Bike? Run? Read? Crafts? Fish? Write? Etc.

A- Any day spent in the woods is a good day, and I have a great hiking buddy (a retired sled dog). I also enjoy creative writing and am involved in the dance programs at the YMCA.

Q- How are you finding living in Cook County so far?

A- I love it. It’s a great community where I’ve met so many kind and welcoming people, and I’m constantly in awe of the nature that surrounds us.
