Cook County News Herald

Meet our contributing photographers

The Cook County News-Herald is thrilled to announce that a group of great local amateur and professional photographers have agreed to submit pictures to the newspaper for your enjoyment. We will introduce these men and women over the next few weeks so you can get to know who is behind the camera.

Some of these photographers have excellent websites with their work for sale or just for your viewing pleasure. We will include these websites and hope you visit them because you will find that what we can show on our pages is just a small sampling of their hard work and amazing talent.

Over the last year or so, you have seen Butch Schulte’s photos appear in many places in the newspaper. For those who don’t know Butch, here’s a little bit about him in his own words.

“I was born and raised in Grand Marais a long time ago.” Of course, like most kids, I delivered papers: The Duluth News Tribune and a Sunday paper that was too heavy to carry so it was loaded onto a sled or into a wagon. Sometimes I had to make two trips.

My father built a gas station in 1953. I still have the original “Grand Opening” ad, a full page in the Cook County News Herald hanging on the wall in my basement. Along with the paper route, I pumped gas and stood on a milk crate to wash windows for my dad. I grew up working for my dad. Went to trade school for mechanics. I left Grand Marais for a while, then came back and bought my dad out; I also bought the old Ford garage and made my business bigger.

At retirement age, I sold everything but my towing business and did towing plus truck driving and mechanic work for a construction company. Now, I have been completely retired for a year. I’m not much short of eighty years old and I still live in Grand Marais.

I have two daughters and five grandchildren.

“My inspiration for taking pictures is a camera that doesn’t use film; I don’t consider myself a “photographer.” I can take all the pictures I want and dump the ones I don’t like without the extra cost of film. That’s when I started taking pictures and I mostly carry my camera with me all of the time and take pictures of the things I feel are interesting or that I just like. For me, it is just a hobby. My favorite subject is all of nature: animals, birds, seasons, water, etc.”

When asked what kind of camera he uses, Butch replied, “I have one camera, a small, portable Nikon with a zoom lens that I carry in my pocket. It works best for me because it is always there. I take pictures when I see them.”
