Cook County News Herald

Meet our contributing photographers

The Cook County News-Herald is thrilled to announce that a group of great local amateur and professional photographers have agreed to submit pictures to the newspaper for your enjoyment. We will introduce these men and women over the next few weeks so you can get to know who is behind the camera.

Some of these photographers have excellent websites with their work for sale or just for your viewing pleasure. We will include these websites and hope you visit them because you will find that what we can show on our pages is just a small sampling of their hard work and amazing talent.

I have lived in the Grand Marais area for the past 15 years. I grew up in Moorhead, Minnesota, and only for short spans of time have lived outside of the state. From Warroad in the north to Mankato in the south and a few places in between, Minnesota has been my home.

Most of my work experience has been in longterm care. Beginning as a nursing assistant caring for the elderly and finishing as a personnel director for a nursing home in Mankato. Soon after my husband, Jay, and I moved to Grand Marias, I began working for Johnson’s Foods until I officially retired a few years ago. We have one son, David, and two grandsons, Paul and Patrick, also of Grand Marias.

My interest in photography began when one of my co-workers, Crystal Clemons, at Johnson’s Foods would show me some of her amazing wildlife photos. When she bought a new camera, she sold me her old one. After that, nature photography became my new hobby. My first impressive photo was shot on a frigid January morning in 2015. The picture was of the sunrise along the shore of Lake Superior. This success inspired me to begin making My Father’s World photo cards that I sell locally at Johnson’s Foods and The Garage (Joy and Company). I later put together a small book titled God Still Speaks of my photos with inspirational Bible verses. This book is also available at The Garage (Joy and Company).

I still consider myself very much an amateur; I know I have much to learn about this art form. Photographing nature has brought to me a new appreciation for the beauty and the amazing variety and detail that surrounds us and for our awesome God who created it all.
