North House Folk School recently hired Joe Beres as its new communication and marketing director. With all that’s going on at North House Folk School, Joe has had to hit the ground running, so to speak, but he took a few minutes from his busy schedule for a short interview.
Q-Where are you from?
A- I grew up around Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and moved to Madison to attend the University of Wisconsin where I studied cinema history and filmmaking. I continued to work for the University for a few years after graduation. I eventually moved to the Twin Cities and worked for the Walker Art Center.
Q- How did you find out about North House?
A- My wife Adrea and I came to Cook County on our honeymoon and visited the North House campus, and we fell in love with the area and the school. I took my first class shortly after that, and have taken several since.
Q- When did you start your new job and how do you like the work and the area so far?
A- We moved to Cook County on August 1, and I started the job shortly after arriving. It’s an incredible place to work. The staff has been incredibly welcoming and the work has been fun, challenging, and rewarding. Having spent so much time visiting Cook County, hoping to someday become a resident, it’s still hard to believe that I get to live and work in such an amazing place and be a part of this community. I feel really fortunate.
Q- What recreational activities do you enjoy outside of work?
A- We love spending time exploring the trails and forests here.We are really looking forward to snowshoeing and spending time outside this winter. I love woodworking and learning new skills.
