Although it was not known what sort of medical condition warranted such rapid transport from Canada to the United States, the Grand Portage Fire Department and Grand Portage Forestry Department were paged at 4:40 p.m. on May 22 to assist with a landing zone for North Memorial Air Care.
According to Brian King, public affairs liaison, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, a Canadian ambulance came through the Grand Portage port of entry with a patient who is a U.S. citizen.
The fire department and forestry crew set up the landing at the Grand Portage State Park west parking lot.
North Memorial Air Care responded, collected the patient and took off without incident.
Because of patient confidentiality, no information is available on the medical condition of the person transported.
