McHugh wins conference 800-meter title

On Wednesday, May 17 the Viking track and field team competed at the Polar League Conference meet in Two Harbors. The weather was miserable; cold, windy and a soaking rain that just wouldn’t let up. However, we had some great performances in spite of the weather.

Maya McHugh was the conference champion in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:37. Linnea Henrikson ran a personal best in both of the hurdling events, 22.88 in the 100-meter hurdles and 61.99 in the 300- meter hurdles. Our girls’ 4×800 meter relay finished in third place with a time of 11:46. Our girls’ 4×400 meter relay finished in 4:58, which earned them sixth place.

In the field, Sam O’Phelan had a personal best long jump placing him fifth with a jump of 17-8. On the track, O’Phelan also placed seventh in the 400- meter dash with a time of 56.86. Henry DeArruda- Weaver had a nice improvement in the 100-meter in the 13.87.

It was a tough day to run the mile. Will Surbaugh placed seventh with a time of 5:12. Andy Kern ran a personal best in the mile with a 5:39. Jron Tamanah ran a personal best in the 2-mile with a time of 12:01 placing him ninth. Jack Willis, who also ran a personal best with a time of 13:08, followed him. Jack Haussner and Vaughn Swindlehurst both ran personal bests in the 300- meter hurdles placing sixth (46.69) and tenth (51.10).

 

 

The Cook County Vikings will be at the Sub- Section meet in Esko on Wednesday, May 24. Those who qualify will run on Thursday, June 1 at the section meet, which will take place at UMD.
