Lawrence V. Scully of Grand Marais filed as a candidate for mayor of Grand Marais on August 11, 2014. The Cook County News-Herald has learned that Scully was found guilty of criminal sexual conduct in Anoka, Minnesota in 1979.
Scully, who was 33 years old at the time, was charged on March 8, 1979 with the molestation of a six-year-old girl. According to Tenth Judicial District Court documents on June 14, 1979, Scully entered a guilty plea to criminal sexual conduct in the second degree. According to court records, on October 30, 1979 Scully was sentenced at the Kanabec County Courthouse in Mora, Minnesota to zero to five years to State Prison at Bayport, Minnesota.
Scully was imprisoned from November 7, 1979 to December 31, 1981 when he petitioned for post conviction relief. The Anoka County document from that hearing declared that the state had not presented any evidence that would justify a finding by the court that release of the petitioner prior to the time he would be released under the sentence currently being served would present a danger to the public or would be incompatible with the welfare of society. The petition for post conviction relief was granted and he was released.
Because Scully is no longer under any probation conditions, he is eligible to run for elected office.
